My name is Neil Nicholson and I am a thatcher from North Uist. This web site should give you an idea about the work I do and the projects I am involved with.
I work with traditional Hebridean materials, such as marram grass, heather and reed. I've been in the thatching business for 10 yrs now and have been mostly working on the west coast of Scotland and I am happy to travel anywhere in the country.
As the months go on, I plan to keep a sort of diary of my thatching work on this site. The thatching work on the Islands is always varied, to say the least. One day I will be in the sand dunes cutting marram grass. The next day I will be cutting turf. And then, a day on the ladders thatching! Whatever the project, I try to use local materials as much as possible. As you will see from the photo albums on this site, I have restored quite a few cottages from ruins. This means I have built up a range of skills from drawing plans for planning and build warrants to landscaping. If I can help you, then please feel free to contact me.
